Claudio Monteverdi was a cathedral chorister, composer, conductor and finally a priest, and in his earlier years was perhaps more famous for writing madrigals. The vespers were published in 1610 and first performed in July of that year, hence this ‘birthday’ performance.
It is a monumental work of music, calling for a choir large enough and skilful enough to cover up to 10 vocal parts in some movements, and split into separate choirs in others while accompanying seven different soloists. This is an exciting challenge for the choir and will be a rewarding experience for the listener.
They will be accompanied by The 18th Century Sinfonia [playing authentic instruments of the period], and seven young soloists who have recently begun, or are just beginning to launch their musical careers.
